I am a freelance science writer working under contract for Brookhaven National Laboratory, a sprawling research facility run by the U.S. Department of Energy. I currently write for Brookhaven's National Synchrotron Light Source II, a state-of-the-art machine that produces x-rays that are used to study a huge variety of samples, from soil to superconductors.
Prior to 2015 I covered research done at the original National Synchrotron Light Source, also located at Brookhaven, which shut down permanently in the fall of 2014.
I have been writing professionally since 2003, first about local events for a small weekly newspaper in eastern Long Island, New York, and then as a full time writer/public affairs representative for Brookhaven. After moving to North Carolina in 2005, I maintained a relationship with Brookhaven as a freelancer. Later, I became a contract employee.
I have a bachelor of science degree in physics from Stony Brook University. I currently live in beautiful southwest Virginia with my husband, four children, four cats, and eight dogs. We raise cattle, pigs, sheep, rabbits, and horses on our 67-acre farm.
